Introduction

The Xumi Mountain Grottoes, located about 60 kilometers northwest of Guyuan City, were an important pass during the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) and a crucial checkpoint on the Silk Road. The grottoes were first carved during the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-557 AD) and continued until the end of the Tang Dynasty. Before the Xumi Mountain Grottoes, most Buddha statues were made of clay, but from here on, stone carving techniques were gradually adopted. The Xumi Mountain Grottoes were carved over different dynasties from the Northern Wei to the Sui and Tang, reflecting various stylistic changes. The Buddha statues in the Northern Wei grottoes have high, prominent noses, retaining the style of Indian Buddhism, with some statues featuring thin faces, sloping shoulders, and wide robes. The Sui Dynasty statues have long upper bodies and short lower bodies, square faces, and short necks, presenting a simple and heavy image. The Tang Dynasty statues show a trend towards fuller figures and luxurious clothing, reflecting the extraordinary spirit of Tang art. The entire scenic area is divided into a museum and grottoes, with the two locations being quite far apart. Visitors can take a sightseeing bus within the scenic area to reach these spots (each way costs 10 yuan, additional fee). The No. 51 grotto in the Xiangguo Temple area is the largest grotto at Xumi Mountain, but it has been severely damaged. In the 1960s, when a reservoir was built near Xumi Mountain, tens of thousands of workers lived in these grottoes. The transportation to the Xumi Mountain Grottoes is not very convenient; there are no direct buses, and visitors need to take a minibus from Guyuan City to Sanying Town, then switch to a private car at the town to reach the scenic area.

Introduction

Wuliangshan Grottoes are located 25 kilometers northwest of Pengyang County, in Tianzhuang Village, Chuankou Township. They are backed by Wuliang Mountain, facing the Shixia River, and are situated by the mountain and the water, offering beautiful scenery. The grottoes were carved into the cliffside halfway up the mountain, with a total of two caves, separated by about 50 meters, facing south and aligned east-west along the Shixia River. This grotto was built in 1032 (the tenth year of the Tian Sheng era of the Song Dynasty). In 1985, the Wuliangshan Grottoes were listed as a county-level cultural relic protection unit. In 1988, they were further listed as a regional-level cultural relic protection unit. In 1991, the people of Pengyang County planted 400 'memorial trees for cultural heritage' around the grottoes.

Liupan Mountain National Forest Park, located in Jinghe Town, Jingyuan County, Guyuan City, is a juncture of the Central Plains farming culture and the northern nomadic culture. It was a crucial stop on the northern route of the ancient Silk Road and a strategic military stronghold throughout history. It is also the birthplace of the poem 'Qing Ping Yue · Liupan Mountain'. The main attractions within the Liupan Mountain National Forest Park include Xiaonanchuan, Liangdianxia, and Erlonghe. Upon entering the park, to the north is Liangdianxia, to the south is Erlonghe, and in the middle is Xiaonanchuan, along with the ecological museum and botanical garden. Liangdianxia is a 10-kilometer-long canyon, historically a summer retreat, surrounded on three sides by mountains with clear streams at the bottom. After exiting Liangdianxia Canyon, a walk along Erlonghe leads to the entrance of Xiaonanchuan Canyon. Traversing the natural forest here and walking for about an hour brings you to Xiaonanshan Waterfall, the deepest point of the forest park.

Introduction

The temple is located in the south of Tongxin County, Wuzhong City, and was first built during the Wanli period (1573-1619) of the Ming Dynasty. It underwent repairs during the Qing Dynasty and has a long history with a relatively large scale.

The temple is divided into an inner and outer courtyard, with the outer courtyard being more spacious. As you enter the temple gate, you can see a beautiful brick-carved screen wall depicting 'The Moon Hidden Among Pines and Cypresses'. The lines of the painting are simple, and the landscape depicted is distant and serene. It is said that the inspiration for this painting comes from the poetry of Wang Wei.

Introduction

The Qingtongxia 108 Pagodas are one of the large groups of Lamaist pagodas, located on the west bank of Qingtongxia Reservoir, about 60 kilometers from the capital city of Yinchuan. The pagodas are arranged in 12 layers from top to bottom in an odd number sequence of 1, 3, 5, 7, 9...19, with a brick wall in front of each layer and a brick-paved ground, forming an equilateral triangular pagoda group, totaling 108 pagodas.
The largest pagoda at the top is 5 meters high, with a square base and a through-hole style Lamaist pagoda, featuring a niche on the east wall. The 2nd to 12th layers are 2.5 to 3 meters high, all being solid Lamaist pagodas. The base of the pagoda has an octagonal or cross-shaped pedestal, on which the pagoda body is built, and the pinnacle is adorned with a canopy and precious bead. The pagoda body is divided into 4 types: the 1st layer is a bowl-shaped body, the 2nd to 4th layers are octagonal drum-shaped with a pointed top, the 5th to 6th layers are gourd-shaped, and the 7th to 12th layers are vase-shaped.
Buddhism believes that there are 108 kinds of troubles in life. To rid oneself of these troubles, one should wear 108 beads and chant 108 sutras. The locals believe that by paying homage to the 108 pagodas, one can eliminate life's troubles and gain good fortune and luck.

Introduction

This Great Wall is divided into the Inner City and the Outer City. The Inner City, after crossing the Ming Village and the highway, climbs up a small hill in the northwest of Guyuan City, about 5 kilometers away. It then passes through Guozhuang, Shilipu, and crosses the Qing Shui River to reach Shawo. The Outer City extends further northwest, forming an irregular bow shape, passing through Qiawa and crossing the Qing Shui River, then turning southeast to Shawo where it merges with the Inner City.

The remains of the Inner City and Outer City form a stark contrast. The Inner City's city towers and walls are tall, wide, and intact, with straight city lines, exuding a majestic and imposing presence. The approximately 8-kilometer-long Inner City remains are relatively well-preserved, except for modern highways and a few later ravines that cut through it. The entire line is basically uninterrupted, with a city tower every 200 to 230 meters. The Outer City is in a state of disrepair, mostly leveled to the ground, with most of the remaining city towers being only 2 to 3 meters high, and most of the city walls are not visible.

Shahu Lake, located about 50 kilometers northwest of Yinchuan City in Pingluo County, is an ecological tourist attraction that combines the landscapes of Jiangnan water towns and desert scenery. The Beiwudang Temple, originally built in the 40th year of the Kangxi reign (1701), is a four-courtyard architectural complex with a natural layout and staggered spacing. The entire structure is finely detailed, symmetrical, dignified, and beautiful. It is an ancient temple that integrates Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. During the Qing Guangxu period, Empress Dowager Cixi bestowed the inscription 'Protect the Nation and Longevity Buddha Zen Temple'.

The ancient tree fossils discovered in 1994 at Xiaoquzigou date back over 200 million years and belong to the Taiwood species, with an exposed surface of about 8 meters. The original tree was over 40 meters long and 60 cm in diameter, possessing high research and观赏 value.

Introduction

The Haiyuan Grand Mosque has been reconstructed and expanded several times, combining Chinese palace-style and Arab architectural art. The prayer hall is five bays wide, and the main hall is seven bays wide, both of which are brick-wood structures. The main hall's main building has two ridges and one vault, covering 300 square meters, accommodating up to 600 people, with a vault of 110 square meters. The prayer hall is three stories high, with the first floor having five bays, the middle floor having three bays, and the top floor having one bay, totaling 240 square meters and 11.7 meters high.

The minaret, prayer hall, and main hall are all paved with 3 cm thick pinewood boards. The second courtyard has three rooms (five beams), six east-west wing rooms, five passage study rooms, three shower rooms, five storage rooms, and one restroom, totaling 24 rooms and 360 square meters. The total construction area is about 1470 square meters.

The eaves of the four corners of the prayer hall and main hall building, the front eaves of the vault, and all the windows and doors are intricately carved with floral patterns. The upper eaves of the windows and doors are adorned with gold-plated Arabic calligraphy of the Quran, appearing exceptionally solemn and dignified. The tall arched doorways are built with bricks, topped with a three-tier wooden minaret, reaching 8 meters high, giving the entire structure a grand and solemn appearance. Surrounding the mosque are fourteen towering elms of the same age as the mosque, with circumferences of about 4 meters, adding to the majestic appearance of the grand mosque.

About Baisi Kou Twin Pagodas

Introduction

The two pagodas stand facing each other from east to west, about a hundred meters apart, both being octagonal, thirteen-story pavilion-style brick pagodas. The two pagodas rise directly from the ground without a base, with a higher first floor, plain and unadorned, and a pointed arch door on the south side, which leads into a thick-walled, hollow, cylindrical pagoda chamber. The eastern pagoda is about 39 meters high, with a conical body. Each floor is adorned with a corbel-angle tooth and corbel brick forming a waist eaves, which extends outward. On top of the pagoda, an octagonal platform is built, in the middle of which is a net-shaped pagoda seat, supporting a 'Thirteen Heavens' treasure pagoda. From the second floor upwards, each floor and each side are decorated with two colorful clay sculptures of beast faces, arranged side by side, with wide-open eyes, exposed fangs, and a very fierce appearance. The construction of the twin pagodas combines the traditional characteristics of Central Plains Buddhist pagodas with painting and carving arts, constituting two magnificent and colorful artistic treasures. In 1986, the state organized efforts to reinforce and repair the twin pagodas. During the repair of the pagoda top of the western pagoda, a sealed hollow dome chamber was found containing a batch of cultural relics, including Mongol Khanate silver coins 'Da Chao Tong Bao', early Yuan Dynasty 'Zhong Tong Bao Chao', silk 'Colorful Buddhist Paintings' (Thangkas), 'Silk Paper Flowers', wooden carvings 'Double Image of the Joyful Diamond', 'Wooden Flower Vase', and bronze Buddha statues. The twin pagodas were listed as the second batch of national key cultural heritage protection units by the state in 1988.

Introduction

Zhongwei High Temple, located in the city center of Zhongwei, was originally named Bao'an Temple. Unlike most other temples, it is built on a high platform, hence also known as the 'High Temple'. Because it is built on a high platform, the main buildings of the temple are arranged along the central axis from low to high, layer upon layer. Within a small area, it houses more than 260 multi-story pavilions. When visiting, tourists enter through the gate and can tour the entire temple by following the central axis from south to north, ascending step by step.

While many tourists enjoy visiting the ancient rock art in the Helan Mountains, there are many places with rock art within Ningxia, most of which are rarely visited and have poor transportation. Introduction

Zhenbeibao Western Film Town is located in the Xixia District of Yinchuan City. In this film town characterized by simplicity, roughness, and desolation, classic films such as "The Herdsman," "Red Sorghum," "A Chinese Odyssey," "The Swordsman," and "The Eagle Shooting Heroes" were filmed, along with over a hundred other influential films and TV series. Introduction

Huangsha Ancient Ferry National Wetland Park in Ningxia is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction, located in Yueyahu Township, Xingqing District, Yinchuan City, close to the eastern bank of the Yellow River, 28 kilometers from downtown Yinchuan, 38 kilometers from Hedong Airport, and 43 kilometers from Yinchuan Railway Station. The wetland park covers a planned area of 32.4 square kilometers, consisting of functional service areas, sand control promotion experimental areas, ecological civilization exhibition areas, Yellow River wetland protection areas, desert amusement areas, Yellow River ancient ferry cultural areas, frontier customs areas, and folk culture parks.

Huangsha Ancient Ferry is an ancient Yellow River ferry, one of the Eight Scenic Spots of Ningxia in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Zhu Zan, the Prince of Qingjing in the Ming Dynasty, described the magnificent scenery here in his poem "Huangsha Ancient Ferry," also explaining the important status of Huangsha Ancient Ferry in ancient transportation. Here, you can visit the ancient ferry where Emperor Kangxi crossed the Yellow River, the Crescent Lake where Wang Zhaojun left her mark on the desert. The park's desert scenery, ancient Yellow River charm, natural wetlands, and the spectacular view of sand embracing the Yellow River are great for an original ecological self-guided tour. The ancient sheep-skin rafts, primitive desert camels, modern wetland dragon boats, and thrilling sand sea surfing make it a fun place.

Introduction

The Western Xia Mausoleum, located in the Helan Mountains on the western outskirts of Yinchuan City, is the royal necropolis of the Western Xia Dynasty, where many emperors of the Western Xia Dynasty are buried. The entire mausoleum area now has 9 imperial tombs and over 140 accompanying tombs, making it one of the largest imperial mausoleums in terms of land area in Chinese history. The shape of the tombs is unique, resembling an inverted steamed bun. In addition, the scenic area also features the Western Xia Museum, the Western Xia History and Art Museum, the Western Xia Tablet Forest, and other facilities to help visitors understand the historical and cultural background behind the tombs.

Currently, tombs 1, 2, and 3 are open to tourists, with Tomb 3 (the "Tai Tomb" of Li Yuanhao, the founding emperor of the Western Xia Dynasty) being relatively close to the Western Xia History and Art Museum and the Western Xia Tablet Forest.

The Western Xia Museum (new building) has recently made its debut. The exhibits are divided into six parts: Western Xia History, Western Xia Culture, Western Xia Religious Art, Western Xia Social Economy, Western Xia Mausoleum, and Conservation and Inheritance. It showcases nearly 5,000 artifacts, including Thangkas, documents, clay sculptures, bronze and ironware, textiles, porcelain, and many exquisite cultural relics unearthed during recent archaeological research at the Western Xia Mausoleum.
